gdn[R] - last Golden Wedding for 2025

05 Jan 2026 1 35
Crimble Eve, and the last rose bloom of 2025, sadly it didn't last much longer [due to the cold snap] It is a very faded flower from the "Golden Wedding" owned by friends, given to them as a celebration of their reaching that milestone.

gdn[R/24] - front door rambler

As it has been so wet, this climber / rambling rose has had a growth spurt this year [2024] and I'm going to have a fun job of getting it back under control. It is, I think, "Madame Alfred Carriere" - which was introduced in 1879. Also, there's some deadwood to prune away and clematis to detach. {plus more work around the door as I've managed to acquire some brambles in with the main clematis stem}.

The team at Peter Beales Roses have bred this rose variety especially to celebrate the RNLI 200th anniversary. "With Courage" is a deep coppery-orange compact floribunda rose variety, flowering in June/July and again in Sept/October. www.classicroses.co.uk/rnli-200th-with-courage-bush-rose.html At one plant for each life saved since 1824, we would need 146,000 plants ! PB are donating 20% of the proceeds form each one sold to the RNLI

The first decent bloom for 2024 on the rambler that lives next to the front door. It is, I think, "Madame Alfred Carriere" - which was introduced in 1879.

Remarkably prolific red rose, growing - as the central / primary plant - in a flower bed outside the caravan. Not strongly scented, but very attractive to insects like bees and butterflies ...

gdn[R/22] - Abraham Darby

I don't know exactly the variety of this rose. It was transplanted in at the beginning of May 2018, after being evicted from a garden in the west midlands, and took some time to get re-established. It is deeply fragrant, with a ball / open cup double structure. The pink petals seem to have a tinge of yellow or orange, depending on the light. This makes me think it might be "Abraham Darby" which was introduced in 1985.

gdn[R/21] - rosey bee

Rosa rugosa 'alba' with added Bombus lucorum [white-tailed bumble bee]. As happened several times this summer, I heard the distinctive "buzz" of a large bee working in the roses. After some exploring and careful watching I found her in this barely open flower. Just as well I found her when I did, because she flew off after this one, having filled her leg pouches.

This is an old variety of, I think, a musk rose. I will try and find the proper ID. "Marjorie Fair" is my current best guess for this one [July 2021]
