Pears originated in western China, though wild ancestors were also found in parts of Europe and North Africa, leading to the two main pear groups: Asian and Occidental. Commercial cultivation began in China around 5,000 BC, with ancient Greeks and Romans later cultivating the Occidental (European) variety. European settlers introduced pears to the New World in the 17th century.
