The Kannada script, used to write the Kannada language, evolved from the Ashokan Brahmi script. Specifically, it developed from the southern varieties of this ancient script. The script's earliest forms, known as Pre-old Kannada, appeared around the 3rd century CE. By the 5th century CE, it had evolved into Old Kannada, with further development and refinement continuing over centuries.

Safe houses were an integral part of the Underground Railroad, the now famous network of safe house locations that were used to assist slaves in escaping to the primarily northern free states in the 19th century United States. Some houses were marked with a statue of an African-American man holding a lantern, called "The Lantern Holder"
