We drove down from Oslo into the Vestfold on spec with an overnight bag and by chance found the Wassilioff Hotel in Stavern which was excellent & being off-season reasonably priced. It is located right on the harbourside. This photo was taken from across the bay on the rocks by the Fredrikshavn Verft.

Taking Metro 1 to its northern terminus at Frognerseteren and walking 20 minutes through the woods brings you to Skomakertjem. As can be seen more woods, lakes & mountains stretch off to the horizon. This area is criss-crossed by walking trails in summer & ski tracks in the winter, all within 40 minutes of central Oslo.

Only a few minutes walk from the metro station & you're in the countryside.
