HBM Bradgate Park Leicestershire 7th July 2026

19 Jul 2026 15 17 40
Blue skies and summer clouds over Bradgate Park. Formerly the estate of the Greys of Groby (including Queen Lady Jane Grey), the grounds of Bradgate House have been a public park since the 1920s when the then owner, Charles Bennion, bequeathed it in perpetuity to "the people of Leicestershire". It's been a deer park even longer. HBM to everyone. Have a great start to the new week.

British Railways Standard 9F 2-10-0 92240 in the bay by the footbridge at Sheffield Park station. It was saved from Woodham's scrapyard in 1978 but it was to be another 12 years before it steamed again, the first 9F to do so in preservation. After a period of active service 92240 was withdrawn some time ago. There is a current scheme known as "Awake the Giant" actively seeking donations for its restoration. HFF to everyone. Have a great weekend.

HBM Clumber Park Nottinghamshire 10th April 2025

Clumber Park is a country park in The Dukeries near Worksop. The estate, which was the seat of the Pelham-Clintons, Dukes of Newcastle, was purchased by the National Trust in 1946. This is a very impressive building but in fact it is "only" the stables. The main house built in the 18th century suffered several fires and then post-WWI heavy taxation led the 9th Duke to demolish it in 1938. There's only one bench but it's a long one and well used. HBM to everyone. Enjoy the start of the new week.

A view of Bradgate Park and Old John Tower taken from Beacon Hill, approx. 5km to the north. On the hill to the right of Old John Tower is the Yeomanry War Memorial. Erected on consecrated ground, the obelisk was built in 1924 and is dedicated to the Leicestershire Yeomanry field regiments that fought and died in the Boer War and the First and Second World Wars.

Kruger National Park South Africa 20th May 1982

We drove from Johannesburg to Kruger Park for a short break spending just one night at Pretoriuskop in the park. With no particular plan we just drove around for the day and were surprised how many animals were about although we didn't see any big cats. This pod of hippos were lazing about in the river. In fact they are among the most dangerous animals in the world due to their aggressive and unpredictable nature.

The Chisos Mountains are mainly of igneous origin and were erupted and deposited during the Cenozoic. The oldest rocks in the mountains are volcanic ash, mixtures of ash and clay, sandstone, and conglomerates.

The original wooden footbridge at Dutton Park station is of course is now long gone as is everything else in view. The bridge was in two sections but neither span looked particularly solid! A Queensland Railways 2000 Class railcar is seen heading north towards Brisbane city centre. Currently the station is closed for rebuilding as part of the Cross River Rail development. HFF to everyone. Enjoy your weekend.

Feeding the birds on the Serpentine in Hyde Park. The Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner and the Palace of Westminster seem much closer than they really are but almost 50 years of tree growth has spoilt the view today.
