The original Cistercian Rufford Abbey was founded by Gilbert de Gant in 1147. After Henry VIII's Dissolution of the monasteries the estate was granted to George Talbot, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury, partly demolished and converted to a country house between 1560 and 1590. The abbey and 150 acres of grounds were bought by Nottinghamshire County Council in 1952. In 1956 the late 17th century north and east wings were demolished and the remains opened to the public by the Council.

Abbey Wood station Up platform looking west from the footbridge. The 1849 South Eastern & Chatham Railway buildings look a bit grubby. Commuters to London city centre observe the two trackmen at work.
Today the station has changed completey out of recognition as Abbey Wood is the eastern terminus of the new Crossrail / Elizabeth line.
Phil Sutters has recently posted a great series of shots of the station:

Calke Abbey stands on the site of a medieval religious house dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538. After passing through several hands, Richard Wendsley acquired Calke, eventually selling the estate in 1585 to Robert Bainbridge. His son sold the estate to Henry Harpur in 1622 for £5,350. It stayed in the Harpur family until the National Trust began caring for it in 1985.

Calke Abbey was owned by the Harpur family for nearly 300 years until it was passed to the National Trust in 1985 in lieu of death duties. Today, the house is open to the public and many of its rooms are deliberately displayed in the state of decline in which the house was acquired.
HFF and have a peaceful weekend.
