Record Riot - 60 Smash Songs for $2.98 postpaid. What a deal! What's the catch, you ask, about this amazing offer which ran on the back cover of comics everywhere in the mid-60's? Perhaps it's that more and more records on approval start showing up in your mailbox before you can do the peppermint twist. Or maybe it's not the original artists? I'm sure someone out there was a bona-fide 'record rioter' and can shed some light on the subject. Still, as advertised, there are many true "smashes" offered here - see for yourself!

I was lucky to meet Jim Steranko at the Windy City Pulp Show a few years back where he signed a few keepsakes for me. This was always my favorite cover of his, and, interestingly enough, he shared the story of how it was as homage to fellow great, Wally Wood. He even told of the conversation they had regarding the cover! I had never previously made the connection with Wood's work, but after the fact, I see Wood's influence all over this cover - not the least of which is the suit itself (not unlike those on E.C.'s Weird Science books), the machinery (gun and especially rocket pack), and the moon as well (looking like one of the worlds on Wood's fantastic sci-fi covers). Mr. Steranko is a fascinating person - insightful, engaging, accomplished and, moreover, gracious. It was a pleasure to meet one of the true legends of comicdom, whose comparitively small body of work had and continues to have a lasting influence on comic artists everywhere. Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Issue No. 6, November 1968. Cover art by Jim Steranko, whose stylized signature can be seen over the exploding Earth.

John Buscema and John Romita handled the art chores for this tale of woe from one of Marvel's 1960's romance offerings, Our Love Story, and it's delightfully emblematic of their work on the more popular superhero titles. Just imagine this is a scene taken from the Coffee Bean hangout of Spiderman lore and we're waiting for Flash Thompson to walk in any moment. That, or picture the patrons in costume and it looks like a splash from an Avengers issue of the same era! Our Love Story - No. 2, December 1969 issue - Cover to follow!
