In the Cold War world of the 1960's, we could at least take solace that when the aliens invade, they'll naturally want to pick on the Soviets a little bit too. Flying Saucers Comics issue No. 2, July 1967.

This first issue of Flying Saucers touts itself as a "collector's edition" - a trend that would become increasingly annoying in the subsequent decades as publishers attempted to boost sales. April 1967.

Likely inspired by S. Sgt. Barry Sadler's number one song of 1966, "Tales of the Green Berets," and lasting a scant five issues, the comic Tales of the Green Beret carried the motto "If we must fight... we will win!" - perhaps too dubious a claim for a dejected America that was tasting defeat in southeast Asia at the time. Tales of the Green Beret - Issue No. 1, January 1967.

There's probably a clinical term like "Arbolanthrophobia" or something for the fear inspired by many trees of fiction with bad intentions. Unknown Worlds - issue No. 56, June-July 1967. Cover art by E. Moritz.

Only a few pages into this outrageous tale, the Robinson Family finds themselves battling along side a group of 12th century Englishmen who fought under Richard the Lionhearted. Naturally, this unlikely alliance proves too much for a horde of marauding space savages. Space Family Robinson - Issue No. 21, April 1967 issue.

Armed with a dandy helmet and magical elixir, Mike Maxwell is able to communicate with and control the beasts of the jungle; additionally, he is able to fuse two animals together which form a Chimera of sorts to likewise do his bidding! B'wana Beast - Showcase - Issue No. 66, February 1967. Cover art by Mike Sekowsky.

When you have a character who as an adult will be able to move planets from their orbits, coming up with a monthly myriad of engaging adventures requires thinking outside the box. Ergo, the creative staff at DC relied heavily on a host of transformation stories. If Jimmy Olsen or Lois Lane wasn't turning into an alien or perhaps a plant, an anthropomorphic animal might just as easily fill the bill. Superboy - Issue No. 142, October 1967. Cover pencils by Curt Swan.

This is almost too psychedelic for me to wrap my brain around. Scooter was the preferred mode of transportation and hence the nickname for the title character, a young British musician, in this hybrid "Archie meets the Beatles" teen humor comic. Swing With Scooter - Issue No. 4, January 1967.

In this issue, the Atom teams with Hawkman to fend off the perilous attack of none other than, errrr... Toyboy, who wreaks havoc at the local department store by using his formidable psychic abilities to animate a host of toys. Hey, not every villain can be as compelling as the Joker! The Atom - Issue No. 31, July 1967. Cover art by Gil Kane.

Dynamo, No-Man, Lightning and Kitten of the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents are imperiled by and over-sized arachnid on this wonderfully rendered cover by former E.C. artist Wally Wood. Thunder Agents - Issue No. 13, June 1967. Cover art by Wally Wood.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agent Leonard Brown is the keeper of the Thunder Belt, which grants its wearer super strength and invulnerability for short periods; hence, the codename, Dynamo. This cover is a perfect example of artist Wally Wood's uncanny ability to render fantasy tableau that is grounded in reality but infused with a sense of heightened drama. His figures look heroic and accessible, but anatomically sensible, unlike many of the grossly-muscled and overly-ripped counterparts of today. Dynamo - Issue No. 4, June 1967. Did I mention the Wally Wood cover art?
