The old Poinciana Hotel in Miami Beach blended nicely with all the other art deco establishments, except for the fact that you can see no others. These linen postcards featured fanciful, airbrushed backgrounds that neglected the reality that the hotels were more often cheek to jowl rather than as spaciously pictured.

Don't you love how some places avoided using the word "motel" at all costs? I guess some proprietors thought it had developed a seedier connotation while "hotel" maintained more a measure of status. Vintage postcard for the Surf Auto Hotel in Santa Monica, California. Circa 1941.

Grand View indeed!

02 Dec 2011 201
Vintage postcard of the landmark Grand View Point Hotel on U.S. 30 through the Pennsylvania hills - circa 1933. I will submit to you that I'm jealous my brother got to see this undeniable roadside classic the summer before it burned. He and a friend went out east on an amusement park road-trip and I stayed behind to chase a couple persistent roof leaks on a place where we all had stuff in storage. Such a deal!
