My father took this photo of me shortly before boarding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway on a day excursion into the beautiful San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado long, long ago. This photo was taken by a Kodak Duaflex II film camera with a f/8 Kodar triplet lens using 620 black and white Kodak film, the print scanned by a HP Scanjet G4050.

From the Million Dollar Highway (U.S.550) just below Red Mountain Pass (11,018 ft/3,358 m) is an impressive view of Chicago Peak which is within the San Juan National Forest just northeast of Telluride. The road ahead passes through an old silver mining region and the remains of the Idarado Mine before plunging precipitously down the Uncompahgre Gorge towards Ouray. Perins Peak

From a distance, Perins Peak is visible through the woodlands of Overend Mountain Park at the edge of the small town of Durango. This forested area was my playground as a small child during the late 1950s where I developed a life-long love for unspoiled nature. In my child's mind I thought that the peak was called "Parents Peak", and that it was a place for grownups to get away from their nagging children. This photo was taken by an Asahi Pentax 6 X 7 medium format film camera and Super-Mult-Coated Takumar/6X7 1:4.5/75 lens with a Zenza Bronica 82mm L 1A filter using Kodak Portra 800 film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

Ice Cream Cone Mountain

As a child I traveled this road with my parents long ago. From our car my sister exclaimed, "Look!! It's Ice Cream Cone Mountain". Although maps identify the mountain by a different name, it will always be Ice Cream Cone Mountain to me.

Last Photo of the Day

As the late afternoon sun touched the horizon at dusk I came upon Chimney Rock near the tiny settlement of Towaoc on the edge of the Navajo Nation. With only seconds of light left before twilight commenced I quickly propped the camera on a fence post and took my last photo of the day. This photo was taken by a Hasselblad 500C medium format film camera with a Carl Zeiss Sonnar 1:4 f=150mm lens and Zenza Bronica 67mm SY44•2C(Y1) filter using Rollei RPX 25 film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.
