In the Plaza of Sonoma is a plaque commemorating an 1846 revolt by Yanqui settlers who captured the Mexican garrison here and declared the Bear Flag Republic .
The Mexican governor sent 55 men to attempt to crush the rebellion, but General José Castro's forces were defeated at the Battle of Olompali.
