Bracted Lousewort
| 22 Jul 2009 |
|
This wild plant was growing along the Gunnery Pass Trail in Kananaskis (off Highway 40) when we went for an all-day hike on Saturday. Usually, when I see this plant, most of the flowers are not yet open. It is a member of the Figwort family, is native, and grows June-August on moist montane slopes.

I know RED is your colour, Rebecca : ) Also, red is considered a lucky colour, so thought I'd use this Indian Paintbrush to go with my very best wishes for tomorrow and the recovery time afterwards. Good Luck! I took this photo when I was out west of the city yesterday afternoon, at Maclean Pond. Sorry to hear about your extremely high temperatures!

Orange on orange / Castilleja miniata

Couldn't resist taking a shot or two of this beautiful orangy-red Painbrush with orange Lichen growing on the rock in the background. Saw this on Saturday, when three of us went on the amazing hike to Gunnery Pass. Usually, my Paintbrush photos have a dark green background of leaves, so I thought it would be fun to shoot it differently this time. A rather messy photo, but different : ) Love the way there are so many colours of Paintbrush, from yellow, to almost white, bright red to deep red, pink to salmon. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this wildflower, the bracts are red and the flowers are green with red tips.
"This is probably a reddish morph of C. rhexiifolia (usually crimson to purplish but sometimes to look like C. miniata...)" Thanks to Mark Egger for this ID!

The day before yesterday (27 July 2012), I was thrilled to get the chance to photograph (telemacro) a beautiful Yellow Pond Lily. Four of us had travelled NW of Calgary to the Medicine River Wildlife Centre, to botanize the land around the Centre. Wonderfully, we were asked if we would like to go out on the pond/lagoon not far from the building. A pretty amazing feeling to paddle a canoe through the reeds and then over calm, open water. I've only ever seen Yellow Pond Lilies at one other location that we have botanized, and fell in love with them instantly. Thanks so much, Judy (staff member at the Centre) for spending the whole day with us and for giving us this great, unexpected experience!
This native, aquatic member of the Water-lily family grows in lakes and ponds June to August. The small, yellow flower is 4-7 cm across, has 6 yellow, petal-like sepals and several small, inconspicuous petals.

Spreading Dogbane
| 31 Aug 2009 |
|
Photographed on 3rd August along the Marston Creek trail, Kananaskis. This native plant grows in dry, sandy areas and open forests, June-August. It has small, very attractive, cup-shaped flowers (6-9 mm long). A member of the Dogbane family.
"The milky juice of this plant yields a type of latex and several attempts have been made to grow Spreading Dogbane commercially for the production of rubber. The Blackfoot used the milky juice as a shampoo to make their hair shiny." From "Plants of Alberta" by Royer and Dickinson.
Harebell

After driving for almost an hour yesterday, west of the city, I found so few wildflowers in bloom and just a scattering of shrivelled up mushrooms. Everywhere is SO dry - we need rain desperately. This is about the most exciting photo I took yesterday, other than a butterfly and a few scenic shots, LOL. "Just" a regular Harebell, but the sunlight really made the colour pop.
Fireweed

The mid-evening sunlight was absolutely gorgeous on these tall Fireweeds. Taken towards the end of an enjoyable walk in Weaselhead a few evenings ago. I hardly ever manage to get out in the evenings, but when I do, I am in awe of the wonderful light that changes everything.
Intense

Just had to shoot these Indian Paintbrush flowers, as they were such an intense, vibrant colour. Somehow, it's hard to resist photographing Paintbrush flowers, as they vary so much in colour : ) These ones were growing along the Gunnery Pass trail that I did with a couple of friends on 18th July.
Water Smartweed
| 04 Aug 2009 |
|
I found this Water Smartweed (enlarged in my image) growing in a small patch of wetland at Glennfield, Fish Creek Park. It belongs to the Buckwheat family and grows in shallow water in ponds and lakes. It is aquatic or semi-aquatic, June to August.
Yellow Pondlily

Two days later, I am STILL on a natural high after seeing these gorgeous, wild Yellow Pondlilies for the very first time. We spent a full day on Thursday botanizing the Bentz Lake Natural Area, north of Calgary and west of Sundre, and these Yellow Pondlilies were growing near the edge of the lake. To get to them from the forest where we were exploring, we had to make our way through a very watery bog, LOL. Apart from one small mishap that left one friend soaked to his upper thighs, we managed it with only soaking wet feet. This native, aquatic member of the Water-lily family grows in lakes and ponds June to August. The yellow flower is 4-7 cm across, has 6 yellow, petal-like sepals and several small, inconspicuous petals.
Today, I was out with five friends, exploring and botanizing (recording all flora and fauna seen) the forest of Bragg Creek Provincial Park, west of Calgary. A perfect day weatherwise as well as far as enjoyment and sightings were concerned. Lots of mushrooms - though no brilliant red ones today, LOL!
Beginning to open

Happened to notice this small Gaillardia flower just beginning to open, when I was on a three-hour walk in a local park yesterday morning. It was on the edge of the creek bank, overlooking the water. I like these flowers at all stages of their life : ) Thanks, Rebecca, I meant to say that I was posting early today because I have a long, afternoon walk and then, if it doesn't rain, I might drive a few of the gravel roads south of the city this evening. Later: no, I just collapsed at home for the day, after all.
Tiny Twinflower
| 10 Jul 2009 |
|
This tiny plant has a pair of hanging bells on each Y-shaped stem. Yesterday, on a hike, we came across a few clumps of these plants that had quite deep pink flowers, as seen in my image - more commonly, the flowers are a pale pinkish white. They are found growing in leaf litter and moss in moist woodlands. This is a member of the Honeysuckle family, and grows June-August.
Gaillardia on green

This photo was actually taken in a friend's garden (they grow many species of wildflowers), but yesterday, three of us saw many of these gorgeous wild Gaillardia on a full-day hike in Kananaskis. They tend to vary from plant to plant, which makes them even more interesting. This native plant grows June-August in prairie grasslands, roadsides and dry, open areas. It is a member of the Aster family.
Yes, I survived the full-day hike yesterday, though my body isn't moving quite like it should today, LOL. The scenery was spectacular and the wildflowers just wonderful. Two of us were taken to this trail by a friend who had been there a handful of times before. Both guys have had a lifetime of walking and hiking - and then there was me, LOL. However, we were stopping constantly to search for plants, record them and photograph them, so it was not a brisk-walking hike, thank goodness, otherwise I wouldn't have gone. Lost count of the number of times I glanced at the mountain sides to check that there were no Grizzly Bears in sight, though one had been along our trail at one point, turning over large rocks to see what was underneath. Thanks, David, for sharing this special place with us, and thanks for your patience with a slower walker : ) I SURVIVED!!
