African Wild Dogs
| 21 Sep 2006 |
|
African Wild Dogs are also known as Painted Dogs. Their habits are similar to those of the Wolf. Their numbers have been declining in the wild in Africa and they are now the rarest large carnivore in the whole of Africa. The Calgary Zoo has a pack of six males, named Watson, Waldo, Weasley, Warner, Wilson and Wheaton.
Black & white butterfly

Caught this colourful shot at the Butterfly House at the Calgary Zoo. This Paper Kite or White Tree Nymph butterfly was showing some wearing of its wings.
Rough-legged Hawk
| 25 Sep 2006 |
|
This hawk was in the aviary at the Calgary Zoo, perched on a log, when it leaned forward and stretched, giving the impression that it was in flight. These Rough-legged Hawks are from the North West Territories and Arctic region and come to western Canada and the USA during migration.
Short-eared Owl close-up
| 25 Sep 2006 |
|
I think I have seen a couple of these Short-eared Owls in the wild but at a tremendous distance that made hoping for photos totally out of the question. So, when I heard that a couple of Short-eared Owls had been brought in to the Calgary Zoo (injured?), I knew I had to go and see what they looked like close to.
Peahen
| 26 Sep 2006 |
|
I think one can use the name "Peacock" for both male and female or else call this a "Peahen". I hadn't realized there is an irridescent sheen on the female's feathers. Very beautiful in her own way, despite being far less colourful than the male. I remember seeing one in the wild many, many years ago while travelling on a train in India.
Barn Owl
| 07 Sep 2006 |
|
This is the only Barn Owl I have ever seen, taken at the Calgary Zoo. I think they have interesting patterns on them.
Great Grey Owl
| 08 Sep 2006 |
|
Wish I had seen this bird out in the wild, though I have seen Great Greys in the countryside before but from a distance. Instead, I have had to make do so far with getting my closer shots at the Calgary Zoo. The aviaries there have Great Greys as well as other owls, with nothing between you and the birds. This owl was sitting in a tree inside one of the huge aviaries maybe 10 feet away from me. Quite an experience to find oneself looking into THESE eyes! Not a single slight movement was missed by these sharp eyes. This is a photo I posted when I first joined Flickr and I don't have any record of what # it reached in Explore. I do know that it was at #416 at one point. Thanks, everyone, for taking a look!
Flamingo

I guess we have ALL taken similar photos to this one! I love those feathers.
Peregrine Falcon

This photo was taken at the Calgary Zoo. Much as I prefer taking photos of wild birds, I would never be able to get this close to one, and see all the details, outside a zoo.
