Those were the days

10 Jul 2008 213
Perhaps a boring photo? I just loved the metallic finish to these colourful Bumper Cars/Dodge'ems. My daughter (visiting Calgary from Vancouver for a week) and I didn't actually go on any of the rides at the Stampede Grounds yesterday morning, but all my kids used to enjoy the Bumper Cars many years ago. So did I!

Fun in the pool

31 Aug 2012 237
The adult female (i.e. Mom) made her way into the tiny pool in this separated area that is used when certain of the Amur Tigers at the Calgary Zoo have to be kept away from the other adult Tigers. Her three cubs, born March 30, 2012, joined her instantly and had great fun climbing over her back and playing with her tail - they love it in there! Photographed though a very dirty window with reflections of all the people watching in front of me and behind me, but a little darkening made it fit to post : ) Taken on 21 August 2012.

Creating water patterns

09 Jul 2012 214
Friends organized a wonderful day out for eight of us yesterday, walking the Sarrail Falls Trail along the edge of Upper Kananaskis Lake, in the Rocky Mountains. Our aim was to find anything that grew, flew or crawled - anything beautiful : ) My favourite kind of day! I just managed to catch this shot throuh the trees along the edge of the lake and liked the water patterns created by this couple in a boat (have blurred out the man's face). As you can see from my photo, the weather was absolutely perfect, though it did get rather too hot later on in the day. It was supposed to get up to 30C, but I don't know what the temperature ended up being. Thanks so much, Dorothy and Stephen, for another wonderful day and thanks so much for doing the driving! (Oops, almost forgot to mention the second stop, at Elpoca - just a short walk, or should I say climb, up a scree slope (loose, very sharp pieces of rock) overlooking a beautiful stream with small waterfalls. However, I got just a short distance and then was unable to get around a bend where footing was maybe 4" wide and too high for me to get down to the ground below. Nothing to hold on to, but moss, ha. Then came the problem of how to turn around on that narow edge so that I could go back to where I started, to join a couple of others who knew it was not a climb they wanted to try. Thanks, David, for trying your best to help!

Round and round they go

13 Jul 2011 223
Spent a few hours down at the Stampede grounds with my youngest daughter yesterday. Ha, I did about 8,000 steps on the hike on the Small Whalebackand on Sunday and then yesterday I did around 10,000 steps walking the Stampede Grounds. Couldn't believe my pedometer when I got home this afternoon after spending about four hours breathing in the smell from the food vendors, getting neck cramps from watching people get flung on a bungee-type ride or the high swings, watching Mom pig feed her 11 little piglets, seeing the most beautiful horses from Clydesdales to Miniatures. It is quite an experience to "do" the Grounds - thanks, Rachel, for a fun time! Ha, hope your photos turned out better than mine!

At Lake Louise, west of Banff, they have a wagon/sleigh pulled by these beautiful horses, to give tourists a ride. It was SO cold there that day : )

Way, way up

Spent a couple of hours at the Stampede Grounds this morning with my daughter from Vancouver, soaking up the annual smell of grease and farm animals. The Calgary Stampede is known around the world and this huge Midway (amusement park) is just a part of all the events that happen during 10 days of Stampede. No one would ever get me on this ferris wheel!

The long way down

09 Jul 2008 196
This is a huge slide at the Stampede Grounds, set up as part of the Midway for Stampede week. I remember my kids coming down this many, many years ago : ). The Calgary Stampede is known around the world - 10 days of craziness! I spent a couple of hours wandering the Stampede Grounds this morning with my daughter from Vancouver (flickr, Silver Pomegranate), soaking up the smell of grease and farm animals, LOL! I was thinking of my 7-year-old grandson, knowing that he will have to miss the Stampede this year. He has a second-degree burn all over the top half of his body (not the lower half, as far as I know yet). He and his parents have very fair skin and always take great caution when out in the sun. Now that school is out, my grandson is in daycare and unfortunately the worker(s) there used ordinary sunscreen (#8, I believe) instead of the very powerful sunscreen that had been given to them to use by my son and daughter-in-law!!!! Apparently, my grandson has blisters the size of golfballs, so I can only imagine what pain he is in. He's not allowed to go out of the house for the next three weeks, poor kid!

The Spectacled Duck - a new species

Spent a couple of hours this morning wandering round the Stampede Grounds with my daughter from Vancouver. The Calgary Stampede is known around the world - such a crazy time and very popular with tourists as well as local people. There is a huge Midway with many "rides" and game booths. These cute little ducks kept moving along a narrow waterway at one booth - no idea what the purpose of the game was, but they looked cute coming round the corner in the sunshine. I was thinking of my 7-year-old grandson when I saw these, knowing that he will have to miss the Stampede this year. He has a second-degree burn all over the top half of his body (not the lower half, as far as I know yet). He and his parents have very fair skin and always take great caution when out in the sun. A bee up close

10 Jul 2008 205
I'm looking forward to seeing what photos my daughter (who lives in Vancouver but is in Calgary for a week at the moment) eventually posts to flickr or sends me in a regular e-mail. We spent a couple of hours together yesterday morning wandering round the Stampede Grounds, soaking up the annual Calgary Stampede atmosphere. This is just a silly photo, of one of the "bumble bees" that are part of one of the Midway (amusement park) rides. For sure, I can't stay away from nature for long, LOL! Actually, I was also curious to see how sharp this image would be in original size - a stationary object taken in full sunlight, unlike most of my usual subjects.

That's what puddles are for

I came across these three young children in a local park with their mother/care giver. She was wonderful with the kids, encouraging them to splash in the puddle and to not worry about getting wet. I did ask permission to take this shot.
