Novelty Photo

20 Mar 2012 3 3 353
One of three loose photos tucked into the Bevelled Mirror Victorian Album. I don't own any other novelty photos like this, but I know many of you have tons of them. Must have been a laugh riot in its day, and still pretty comical. That's a dog, not a rug, under the table, by the way.

The Special Effects Guy Quit...

19 Mar 2016 4 3 570
...so the snow ended rather abruptly. Found photo, Ferrisburgh, Vermont. I bought his card because I thought the snow cutoff was so funny, but then quite a few people noted that this was a woman dressed as a man, and seemed absolutely sure of it - so I'm posting it for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of " “VICE VERSA “ – “a lady and a gentleman dressing in clothes of the opposite sex are vice versa". I'm not fully convinced, though.

Fancy Chair, Fancy Dress. Fancy Ectoplasm?

23 Oct 2016 6 5 729
Brought forward for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "SPIRIT PHOTOGRAPHY/GHOSTLY IMAGES/ HAUNTED HOUSES". This cabinet card is quite odd because the right side is detailed, with an elaborate set up - and the left side just has the strange foggy mist or "ectoplasm" in place of the rest of the room. What makes this more intriguing to me is that it was taken in Middlebury, Vermont - very close to the (then famous) "spirit raising" Eddy brothers. And my date guess puts it fairly close to all the excitement. Here's a fun link, if you're interested. www.prairieghosts.com/eddy.html or more briefly: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddy_Brothers Jackson Studio, Middlebury, Vt.. I have also wondered if she is wearing mourning, decorated with jet beads. Perhaps the ghostly image is related to something she is trying to impart?

Portrait of a Young Girl

11 Apr 2020 5 2 349
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: PEOPLE LOOKING RIGHT AT YOU This is a beautifully done Cabinet Card, with soft tones and beautiful lighting. Her expression is unreadable, I think. It could be interpreted as pensive, sad, fed-up, curious, slightly sulky, or ...? I think it's possible that she's a redhead. The address of the studio printed on the back is: 56 N Eighth St. and 1937 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia. The name of the Studio is (I think) Louis B. Taub. I'm guessing this was taken in the 1880s. Alan - do you have any images from this studio? Thanks to Alan, the photographer's name has been revealed as Louis Blaul.

Weird

12 Apr 2021 4 1 324
Uploaded (late) for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: ODD BACKDROPS OR BACKGROUNDS I find this so, so weird. These two women, with their strange tightly curled hair, stare seriously (actually joylessly, for the one on the right) at the photographer with their hands in a similar pose. Their feet seem to be resting on real leaves. Behind them is a very odd backdrop. Against a strange, muted backdrop cloth there are misty trees with one leafless one hanging upside down over a stump. Even stranger, to the right is a crudely drawn path leading up to really bizarre house/cabin. There appears to be a roof - was this white stick house drawn on another earlier one? It has an extremely narrow door, no windows apart from the fancy ones at the top, and no roof behind the point. It looks as though it's imitating a child's drawing, but it really doesn't look like a child's drawing. hmmmmm.

Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: TREE (IN A STUDIO PHOTO) Taken at the Fritz Studio in Reading, Pennsylvania. The little girl's name is written on the back: Hattie Millard She appears to be holding part of the tree vine - hope it's not poison ivy. : )
