Every year on Prinsjesdag (Princes' Day) the Royal Family appears on this balcony and waves to the crowd.

The portrait was painted in 1834, when the brothers were 17 and 16. Willem would become king Willem III in 1849. His brother would die in 1848.

The Netherlands was the second nation to recognise the United States in 1782, although the Dutch Island of St. Eustatius had recognised it in 1776 (without support of the Dutch government). William Short was the fourth representative of the USA in the Netherlands.
