Konings produced the first automobiles in the Netherlands. "In 1873, Michael Konings built his first factory in Swalmen, the Netherlands. Back then, the workshop ran on steam and the river Swalm served as a source of energy. For many years, the workshop housed a foundry geared towards meeting the demands generated by the manufacture of good-quality, durable machinery. For over 130 years, generations of VDL Konings employees have built machines and equipment serving the industries of the day. In the early 1900s, the first automobiles ever manufactured in the Netherlands rolled off the Konings site. Boosted by rapid regional industrial growth, VDL Konings evolved relatively quickly to a producer of equipment ranging from agricultural- to paper- and textile industry machinery. In the 1970s, Konings started developing several promising, innovative product lines for four main Business Units. VDL Konings now serves the medical and plastics industries and is an excellent partner for complex welding and milling constructions. Konings behoort tot het beperkte gezelschap van overlevenden. Vanuit de smederij waar onderdelen en vele landbouwmachines gemaakt werden, groeide het bedrijf en werd het in 1898 uitgebreid met een ijzergieterij. Vanaf dat moment konden de eigen producten met in huis gegoten onderdelen uitgevoerd worden. In 1936 werd een 2 motorige vrachtauto ontwikkeld en geproduceerd. Na volledige ontruiming in 1945 (WOII) werd het bedrijf weer van begin af aan opgebouwd. In deze naoorlogse jaren weet Konings zijn positie sterk te verbeteren. Vanwege de enorme groei verhuist de onderneming (m.u.w. de ijzergieterij) in 1964 naar de huidige locatie. De jaren tachtig kenmerken zich door een sterke ontwikkeling van de textiel machines. Begin jaren negentig stapt de familie Konings uit het bedrijf maar weet met zorg te continuïteit te waarborgen. In 1998 wordt de ijzergieterij afgestoten en overgedragen aan een nieuwe eigenaar. De machinefabriek gaat zich meer en meer richten op de machinebouw in hoogwaardige technologische segmenten. In 1998 wordt tevens een nieuw gebouw t.b.v. medische apparatenbouw in gebruik genomen. In 2005 wordt Konings onderdeel van de VDL Groep. De kracht van de samenwerking binnen de groep en de sterke financiële positie van de VDL groep bieden een solide basis om ook in de toekomst een stabiele partner te zijn. Meer dan 130 jaar, hebben generaties Konings vakmensen hun kennis en kunde voor hun klanten aangewend om goede en betrouwbare producten te maken. "Gebruik Touw" means "Use Rope". This sewer cover was made by the Dutch iron company Touw brothers, in Dutch you abbreviate that to "Gebr. Touw". If you don't know that abbreviation, for instance because you are young, you might think it means " gebruik touw ". The Gebr. Touw company was an iron works from the 19th century. It was located in Breda (Brabant) in the Belcrum neighbourhood. People of that neighbourhood complained for years about the stench and smoke coming from the factory. The provincial government didn't listen, but the economic recession of the 1980s came to the rescue of the inhabitants. The company went broke in 1983.
