The new City Hall building was built in the beginning of the 20th century on the location of Pleißenburg castle. Pleißenburg dated from the 13th century. They kept the tower base.

The palazzo was built from 1297 to 1310, with later additions and alterations.

Originally it had a globe, but that has been lost.
