The Pompeion was used to prepare the Panathenaia, a festival that was held every four years in August. It was built around 400 BC. It also had other uses. Ancient sources mention that there was a bronze statue of Socrates by Lysippos there. The Pompeion was also frequented by Diogenes. The building was destroyed in 86 BC. Below the Pompeion burials were found from 1100–1000BC.
