It was called Keramaikos or Dromos. Prominent Athenians were buried alongside the road.

The Pompeion was used to prepare the Panathenaia, a festival that was held every four years in August. It was built around 400 BC. It also had other uses. Ancient sources mention that there was a bronze statue of Socrates by Lysippos there. The Pompeion was also frequented by Diogenes. The building was destroyed in 86 BC. Below the Pompeion burials were found from 1100–1000BC.

The oldest part dates from 479–478 BC. The latest repair dates from 267 AD, after the Herulians destroyed the city.
