A group photo of Tennessee Town kindergarten children and teachers celebrating George Washington's birthday, Topeka, Kansas. This was a kindergarten for African American children sponsored by the Central Congregational Church in Topeka, Kansas. Dr. Charles Monroe Sheldon, started the kindergarten in 1893 and served as pastor of the church from 1889-1920. This was the first African American kindergarten west of the Mississippi River.
