One of the most famous Underground Railroad operatives in the United States, William Still worked at the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society at the corner of 5th and Arch Streets during the late-1840s and 1850s. He aided more than 900 fugitive slaves, including Henry Box Brown (who sent himself to freedom in a box from Virginia) and Jane Johnson (who fled from her North Carolina master on the Philadelphia waterfront). A writer, businessman, and reformer, Still also battled against racial prejudice in Philadelphia. After the Civil War, he led the struggle against segregated streetcars. In 1872, he published a massive book of stories about his work on the Underground Railroad, which remains popular today. William Still was born October 7, 1821 in Burlington County, New Jersey, to Charity and Levin Still. Both of his parents were born enslaved. His father, was known as Levin Steel but changed his last name to Still after escaping slavery. And his mother, Sidney, changed her first name to Charity to protect herself from re-enslavement. Still’s parents had come to New Jersey separately. First, his father bought his freedom in 1798 from his enslaver in Caroline County. Charity escaped twice from Maryland. The first time, she escaped with their four children. They were all recaptured and returned to slavery. A few months later, Charity escaped again, taking only her two younger daughters with her. She succeeded in reaching her husband in New Jersey. Following her escape, Charity and Levin had 14 more children, of whom William was the youngest. Though these children were born in the free state of New Jersey, under Maryland and Federal Slave Law, they were still legally enslaved, as their mother was an escapee. According to New Jersey law, they were free. Charity and Levin could do nothing for their older boys left enslaved. William Still grew up with vivid images of the horrors of slavery. His parents instilled in him strong family and work values as well as pride and self-determination. He worked on his family’s farm until he was twenty, when he went to work for neighboring farmers. He had little formal education and was largely self-taught. In 1844 he left for Philadelphia, where he spent three years working at a number of odd jobs. In 1847, he married Letitia George, who gave birth to their four children. That year, he was hired as clerk for the Pennsylvania Society for the Abolition of Slavery. Three years later he was named chair of the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee, the clandestine wing of the Abolition Society that organized the city’s Underground Railroad. Still and the committee helped shelter fugitives stopping in Philadelphia on the way to Canada. One of the fugitives he helped was his brother, Peter Still, who had been left behind by his mother during her escape. Levin, Jr. and Peter were sold from Maryland to slave owners in Lexington, Kentucky. Later they were resold to planters in Alabama in the Deep South. Levin, Jr. died from a whipping while enslaved. Peter and most of his family escaped from slavery when he was about age 50. After reaching Philadelphia, Peter sought help at the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society to find his parents or other members of his birth family. When they first met, he and William Still had no idea they were related. But, as William listened to Peter’s story, he recognized the history his mother had told him many times. After learning that his older brother Levin was whipped to death for visiting his wife without permission, William shouted, “What if I told you I was your brother!” Later Peter and his mother were reunited after having been separated for 42 years. Often called The Father of the Underground Railroad, Still helped as many as 800 enslaved African Americans escape to freedom. He was just a boy when he helped the first one escape. He never knew the man’s name; only that he was being hunted by slave catchers. Thus, he vowed that the stories of the fugitives would never be forgotten. He interviewed each person and kept careful records, including a brief biography and the destination for each, along with any alias adopted. He kept his records carefully hidden but knew the accounts would be critical in aiding the future reunion of family members who became separated during slavery. Still also worked with other Underground Railroad agents operating in the South and in many counties in southern Pennsylvania. His network to freedom also included agents in New Jersey, New York, New England and Canada. Conductor Harriet Tubman traveled through his office with fellow passengers on several occasions during the 1850s and Still forged a connection with the family of John Brown. Still gave material aid to John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry and housed Brown’s wife after the raid. During the Civil War Still devoted himself to business ventures; he opened a store that sold stoves, he sold provisions to Black soldiers stationed at nearby Camp William Penn, and he started a successful coal business. In the late 1860s he led a successful campaign to end discrimination on Philadelphia streetcars, helped organize a research organization to collect data about African Americans, and played for the all-black Philadelphia Pythians baseball team, which was denied entry into a white league. After the Civil War, Still published an account of the Underground Railroad, The Underground Railroad Records (1872), based on the secret notes he had kept in diaries during those years. His book, which is the only first person account of Black activities on the Underground Railroad written and self-published by an African American, went through three editions and in 1876 was displayed at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. The book portrays the fugitives as courageous, even heroic figures and their escape to freedom as an act of self-determination. In the late 19th century Still developed several successful businesses and continued to devote himself to black social causes. In the 1870s and 1880s he supported local reform candidates, organized a YMCA branch for black youth, served on the Freedmen’s Aid Commission, and helped manage homes for African-American elderly and orphans. In the early 1880s Still was one of a group of older black leaders in the Northeast who left the Republican Party to encourage black political independence and support of Democratic candidates when such support was advantageous to African Americans. Despite his extensive political activities, Still advocated economic self-improvement over politics as the best course for black advancement. In 1888 Still and his son-in-law, Matthew Anderson, a prominent black minister and businessman in Philadelphia, founded the Berean Building and Loan Association, which provided loans to black home buyers. Still served as the association’s first president. From 1896 to 1901 he also served as president of the Pennsylvania Society for the Abolition of Slavery, which after 1865 continued to work for African-American rights and added “and for Improving the Condition of the African Race” to its title. Still died in Philadelphia in 1902. Brothers Peter, James and William Still had moved with their families to Lawnside, New Jersey, a community developed and owned by African Americans. To this day, their descendants have an annual family reunion every August. Notable members of the Still family include the composer William Grant Still, professional WNBA basketball player Valerie Still, professional NFL defensive end Art Still, and professional NFL defensive tackle Devon Still. Thomas Brown

Allowed to purchase his freedom, Thomas Arthur Brown was the son of a Scottish woman who owned a Maryland plantation and the plantation's Black overseer. He was well educated and at some point became known as 'Mr. Brown, the walking encyclopedia.' He along with his wife, also formerly enslaved, was actively involved in the Underground Railroad. His daughter, Hallie Q Brown earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilberforce University and later became Dean of Women at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. She helped found the National Association of Colored Women (NACW), was elected Secretary of Education of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1900 and served as the 7th National President of the NACW. William C Goodridge

William C. Goodridge was born enslaved in Baltimore, Maryland. Eventually he became a prominent businessman in York, Pennsylvania and an activist on the Underground Railroad. William C. Goodridge was born to an enslaved African American mother in Baltimore, Maryland in 1806. It is not known who his father was, but it is generally assumed he was a white man. In 1811 he was indentured to the Reverend Michael Dunn who operated a tannery in York. Goodridge received his freedom in 1822 when Dunn went bankrupt. Goodridge then moved to York, Pennsylvania, where he opened his own barber shop. In 1827, he married Evalina Wallace who also became his business partner. The two had seven children, five of which survived to adulthood. Goodridge then opened an employment agency, began to invest in commercial and residential real estate, and in 1842 opened his own freight service, the “Reliance Line of Burthen Cars” on the railroad line between York and Philadelphia. Cementing his position in York, he in 1847 built Centre Hall, a five-story commercial property in the center of town. The same year they were married, the Goodridges moved into a well-built brick home along Philadelphia Street and William lived there until the mid-1860s. The couple quickly expanded their barber business to include the sale of various items, to include a baldness cure known as Oil of Celsus. Goodridge then opened a freight service, the Reliance Line, in 1842 which operated primarily between York, Philadelphia and Baltimore. In 1847 he built the tallest building in York, Centre Hall, a five-story commercial property located in central York. Goodridge operated an employment agency from Centre Hall and rented out space to various businesses, to include a tavern and York’s first newspaper, The Democrat. One of Goodridge’s sons also operated a photography studio within Centre Hall. As a mixed race businessman in a town and state where many vehemently opposed the abolition movement, Goodridge kept a low profile, especially after passage of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850 made aiding escaped slaves a federal crime, so we will never know the extent of his activities. His name, however, is associated with two major events in the struggle against slavery. In the aftermath of the Christiana riot in neighboring Lancaster County, some of the black men who had participating in that deadly firefight made the first leg of their trip north to safety in Canada concealed in a special freight car of Goodridge’s Reliance Line. In the aftermath of John Brown’s failed raid on the federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry in October 1859, Osborne Perry Anderson, one of Brown’s trusted lieutenants, fled to York, where Goodridge arranged his safe passage by railroad to Philadelphia. By 1856, Goodridge owned 12 properties in York and was one of the wealthiest African Americans in south central Pennsylvania. However, things began to go awry after his wife died in 1852 and most of his properties were sold at auction after he went bankrupt just prior to the start of the Civil War. Goodridge remained a barber in York until 1864 when he moved to East Saginaw, Michigan to live with family. He then moved on to Minneapolis to live with his daughter, Emily, where he died in 1873 at age 66. In 1998, the Goodridge home in York became one of the first Underground Railroad sites designated by the National Park Service as a National Historic Landmark. There the Goodridge Freedom House and Underground Railroad Museum is working towards opening a museum in his honor. Until recently, the only known image of William C. Goodridge, was a grainy one published in a York newspaper in 1907. In September of 2015, an original ambrotype believed to be of Goodridge was sold on ebay. The photograph, which is not marked, is small but clear. The buyer, Robert Davis of Sacramento, contacted Carol Kauffman at the Crispus Attucks Association in York to share his discovery. The association had been working on the restoration of the Goodridge Freedom House & Underground Railroad Museum in York for several years. "It's an amazing picture for the time," Kauffman said. Davis loaned that photograph as well as three tintypes of Goodridge's descendants to the Crispus Attucks Association for a reception that took place in 2015 in honor of William C. Goodridge. The event was held at the York railroad station. It was also part of a fundraiser for the renovation of his former home in York.
