The bottom of Sourmilk Gill Waterfall.
Sourmilk Gill is impossible to miss. It thunders down nearly 400m (1,300ft) of steep fellside from Bleaberry Tarn to Buttermere in one headlong cascade through the trees. When it’s in spate, you can appreciate its full power. During the 2009 floods it brought pink granite boulders the size of microwaves crashing down from Red Pike until it filled the channel beneath the footbridge.

Buttermere lake, famous for its beautiful setting among the northern fells, is correctly called just ‘Buttermere’. This means ‘the lake by the dairy pastures’. It is 1.24 miles (2 km) long, 620 yards (570 m) wide and 75 feet (23 m) deep.

Hauntingly beautiful. Majestic. Enchanting. No matter how many adjectives you use, they’ll never do Buttermere the justice it so rightly deserves. Buttermere lake and village lie inside a dramatic valley where hushed woodlands and mighty fells cast shimmering reflections across the water. It has become one of the most-loved places in the Lake District, and rightly so.

Wainwright's Memorial Window
Alfred Wainwright (1907-1991) will always be known for his famous Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells which he compiled between 1952 and 1966. These handwritten and hand-drawn works of art have given inspiration to all true fellwalkers for the past forty years. For this labour of love, as he called it, he was awarded the MBE.
This window in St James's Church, Buttermere, looks across Lake Buttermere to his favourite mountain, called Haystacks. There is a memorial plaque at the bottom of the window which says:
Pause and remember Alfred Wainwright
Fellwalker, guide book author, illustrator who loved this valley
Lift your eyes to Haystacks his favourite place
