Here's an external view of the Grossmarkthalle, which makes its history much more obvious. The brickwork even looks relatively unrestored, with some of the original coal soot still on it. At the time, the soot would have been a nuisance, but today it adds character.

This department store looks very retro, like something from the late 19th Century, and that's not an accident. It IS that old, actually, being originally the Grossmarkthalle, built in 1893-1895. It's exactly my type of building, or rather one of the many 19th Century curiousities that I like.
