Here's a side view of the Cathedral.

These are the spires of Koln, or Cologne, Cathedral, which were what made it the largest building in the world. The Washington Monument surpassed it, and today it can only claim to be the world's second-largest church, after the Ulm Minster, which is 161.5 metres tall as opposed to the Koln Cathedral's 157 metres.

Built between 1248 and 1880, Koln Cathedral is Germany's most-visited tourist destination, with 20,000 people visiting daily (on average). The spires are even taller than they look here, at 157 metres, making them the second tallest in the world. They also made Koln Cathedral briefly the tallest building in the world, from 1880 to 1884. Here's an original, more-or-less unedited shot of St. Vitus Cathedral taken through the trees in Petrinske Sady in the gloom of February.

Soon after passing Vysehrad, the main for Beroun crosses the Zeleznicni Most, the most visible of the rail bridges over the Vltava (as the others are in out-of-the-way neighborhoods). If you look out over the city, it's surprising what you can see when you consider that this is a cameraphone image. Every major landmark on the west bank of the Vltava (except for Miklasky Chram) from Stadion Strahov to Prazky Hrad is at least slightly visible, encompassing the neighborhoods of Smichov, Strahov, the Mala Strana, and the Hradcany all at once.

Here's an alternate shot of the cathedral and white tower, with some street peformers in the street below. They were promoting a historical play for children.

Two of the most important attractions in the center of Hradec Kralove are the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, on the right, and the White Tower, on the left. The Cathedral was built in 1307, but did not achieve the status of a Cathedral until the founding of the Diocese of Hradec Kralove in 1664. The cathedral was rebuilt in 1864, 1874, and 1901, giving it its present appearance. The White Tower, added in 1589, was constructed to hold an astronomical clock (removed in 1829) and an enormous 10-ton bell, the Augustine Bell, which is still in the tower today. The "new" clock from 1829 is interesting in its own right, in that the long hand indicates hours, and the short one minutes. Originally run by traditional clockwork, it has since been converted to electric motion, although the original motion has been preserved. At 71.5 meters in height, the tower also makes a good observation tower, and is open to the public for this purpose. Needless to say, the giant bell is not normally active, as it was always manually operated anyway.

I got this shot more or less randomly, when I noticed this replica Viking longboat in the Vltava. I'm not sure what the inspiration for the boat was. I'm assuming it's just an attempt at getting attention. In the background, incidentally, you can see Miklasky Chram on the left, and Prazky Hrad, the Prague Castle, on the right.

I also took this parting shot of the Cathedral, which was one of the most complete that I got.

The original Litomerice basilica on this site dated to 1057, but the current St. Stephen's Cathedral dates to 1655, when the Litomerice bishopric was founded. The clock tower is newer, being built at the end of the 19th Century to replace the original bell tower.

Here's the second edit to Picture 2. I basically used the same technique as on Picture 1 to get a better edit, bumping up the black level on the despeckle tool in Gimp. I like this shot of St. Paul's, too, and it was shot on the same night as Picture 1, right after I more or less stumbled upon it while wandering London at night.

Having practiced more with the despeckle tool in Gimp, I decided to edit this horrible scan yet again to see if I could make it less bad. Luckily, I managed to get some semi-decent results. I hope you like how it looks now. :-) Designed by Sir Christopher Wren to replace the original St. Paul's Cathedral destroyed in the Great London Fire of 1666, although that earlier St. Paul's, built in 1087-1314, had actually been the fourth cathedral to sit on this site and some historians believe that the site has Roman Pagan origins. There was a church built here at least as early as 604 AD, supposedly on an ancient Roman See. In any case, as a photo, this is one of my all-time favorites, and I hope you like it too.
