I find the many Lupine species of Washington difficult to identify, but believe this to be the Elegant Lupine, Lupinus lepidus var. lepidus. It was photographed along the Old Blewett Road on the east side of the Cascades where it puts on quite a show early in the summer (see insets).

When we traveled through Blewett Pass on our Washington-Oregon-California trip recently, we found the wildflowers putting on a great show as they often do there, especially the Lupines, these, we believe, the Elegant Lupines, Lupinus lepidus var. lepidus.

Among the Lupines we photographed in Blewett Pass along the Old Blewett Road, there were a number of plants with nearly white flowers, but they appear to me to be the Elegant Lupine, Lupinus lepidus var. lepidus.

These are some of the wildflowers along the Old Blewett Road, the old highway through Blewett Pass, now replaced by a faster and less scenic road. Most of the wildflowers in the photo are Buckwheats but the display is one of the reasons we love the road.

Taken along the Old Blewett Road in Blewett Pass, this is some of the scenery there. The Old Blewett Road is former highway through the pass and part of it remains driveable. It is a favorite place of ours for wildflowers.

Photographed in Blewett Pass between Leavenworth and Cle Elum, this is a favorite though common wildflower, Scarlet Gilia. The Old Blewett Road, part of which survives and is driveable, is a favorite place for wildflowers, though the view are limited.

This is the rare albino form of the Mountain Lady's Slipper, Cypripedium montanum. The ordinary form has petals and sepals that vary from a dark mahogany to greenish with mahogany markings and a pouch that is purple lined. This form, forma praetertinctum, has no purple color at all and lacks even the red spots that are sometimes found on the staminode. These were photographed in Blewett Pass south of Leavenworth, Washington.

These beautiful Penstemons were photographed in Dry Falls State Park in central Washington. They are a very common wildflower in our area. On our recent trip we would see them again in the Cascades of Washington, in Oregon and in the fields near our home when we returned.

Blewett Pass is on the east slopes of the Cascades and a favorite place or ours for wildflowers and native orchids, including the Lady's Slippers I posted previously. In the photo, the flowers in the foreground are Showy Penstemon, Penstemon speciosus, with Bitterbush, Purshia tridentata, the plant with the pale yellow flowers behind them. The view is south over the foothills of the Cascades.
