Coming into Yellowstone National Park from the west, one follows the entrance road for fourteen miles from the town of West Yellowstone, just outside the park, to Madison Junction where the entrance road joins the lower loop of the main road. Madison Junction is also the place where the Madison River begins at the confluence of the Gibbon and Firehole Rivers and then flows out of the park to the west along the same route as thee entrance road. There is a campground at Madison Junction and these sunset photos were taken near the campground and the river. We were camped there early in the year when the roads were just being opened.

This is the Madison River at Madison Junction just outside the campground there. The Madison River begins here at the confluence of the Gibbon and Firehole Rivers and flows out of the park to the west.

When in Yellowstone last summer we came in via the west entrance and joined the main loop at Madison Junction. Near the junction in a small parking area we first saw this bison cow and her new calf. The calf was so young the umbilical cord had not yet fallen off. We took a few pictures and headed back out to the main road where we found them again strolling down the middle of the road as though they owned it (which in Yellowstone they do). We had no choice but to follow them very slowly and at a distance until they left the road and disappeared into the woods. There are other pictures of them on my blog post, but I especially liked this one.
