Rhyolite, Nevada, is a ghost town on the California and Nevada border. It flourished during a gold rush in the late 1800's but declined and became a ghost town in the 1920's. Some of the old buildings are visible in the background.

Heading south out of Death Valley National Park, we stopped at the ghost town of Ballarat, where we took some photos of this old truck. There is not much left of the town - a kind of store and museum and a few ruined buildings and that is all. In fact, the most exciting thing we saw in the town was a Coachwhip Snake (see inset).

This old truck was photographed along the road in the area known as the Palouse, an area of wheat farms and rolling hills. We would have liked to have gotten closer but the area was marked "No Trespassing."

On our way to Spokane last August we drove across the Columbia plateau while the wheat was being harvested and stopped often for pictures. This is rather typical of the area, rolling country with few trees and a lot of abandoned farms, houses and vehicles. My wife took this picture and because hers was better than mine I posted hers.

One of our favorite places for photos is a home on the Mosquito Lake Road that has many derelict vehicles on the property, including old construction and logging equipment and old trucks and cars.
