I wonder why the snails congregate like this..........is it for warmth or just to keep each other company?

You seem to be finding a lot of snails Isabel. Strange to see them all in a cluster like this. Maybe they are getting some nutrients from the fence. They make a great picture though, especially with the different colours. I like the rusty fence too
