I'd think this is an antlion hole, for trapping ants. Great shot.

First great clue, I could never see the animal but there are a lot of these here in Spring

I would agree with the ant hill/ant nest guesses. It's certainly a fascinating and well detailed shot Isabel.

My first thought: anthill. But wouldn't that be too easy? A molehill of a rock mole perhaps? ;-)
I hope you'll let us know eventually. But whatever it is, it's sure photogenic.

Xata club has replied to Edna Edenkoben club
Never saw the “beast” but antlion trap indeed ! Just dont fall on it if you are the ant size !

Assuming it wasn't made by you Isabel I don't think it's anything to do with ants I think it's on a beach at low tide something that closes the hole when the tide comes in

Isabel* I would say it's sand bees (Andrena) - they also called earth bees - because they pile sand into mounds. I saw them lying in and out. Sometimes they pushed small balls of sand outside.
There were several hills in the immediate vicinity.

But no, not here, it is an antlion trap. We have sandbees but in the coastal area.
