Mother Church of Santa Maria do Castelo
Tavira

Mother Church of Santa Maria do Castelo Mother Church of Santa Maria do Castelo
Built in the second half of the 13th century on the site of the former Tavira mosque, the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo was built in the Gothic style, as evidenced by its ogival gateway, but it suffered considerable damage during the 1755 earthquake, so it had to be rebuilt.
The project was designed by the Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri, who took care to maintain the original structure of the church - three naves and four tramos - taking advantage of the headboard and some side chapels, such as the Gospel Chapel, in the Gothic style, and the Senhor dos Passos Chapel, in the Manueline style but covered with 17th century tiles.
Regarding the interior ornamentation, the main chapel deserves to be highlighted, where one can see a retable from the beginning of the 19th century of simulated (painted) architecture. On the side walls of the main chapel there are two medieval inscriptions marking the presence of the tomb of D. Paio Peres Correia and the six knights who died in the Christian reconquest of Tavira.
Equally interesting are the altarpiece of the Passion, in the Rococo style, and the neoclassical altarpiece of the baptistery, which incorporates a beautiful late 18th century painting depicting the assumption of the Virgin Mary, and whose authorship is attributed to the Italian Corrado Guiaquinto.
In this church, an opportunity to visit an exhibition of sacred art with images and paintings dating from the 15th to 19th centuries.

Obrigada Paulo

Some nice ornate details at the top of the pillars. What is causing the brown colour here? When I looked at the link the church is white.

The stone is not pristine white and also the wind brings red dust (soil is redish in our countries).
