One of the most emblematic species of the Alentejo, the Great Bustard is the heaviest of the European birds, but
also one of the most difficult to observe.
Unusual and with a very localized distribution, the bustard very difficult to find outside its
usual places of occurrence. The species has today in Portugal a population of about 1000
individuals (half of which are in the plains of Castro Verde). Frequents mostly large
open extensions and hardly tolerates people approaching within a kilometre. Although the
species is mainly resident, there is usually some dispersion of individuals in the summer months,
and then there are sporadic observations of bustards in other parts of the country.
