EVEN IF IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE, THE SEA WAS QUITE ROUGH AND IT WAS VERY HARD TO FOCUS. I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO TAKE THE TELECONVERTER OFF BUT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE, NO INSIDE SHELTER TO DO IT SAFELY... SO THIS IS ALL I COULD GET, AND IN THE GROUP THE ONLY ONE TO HAVE SOMETHING ACCEPTABLE... AND MOST OF THE GROUP WAS SEASICK AND ... REALLY SICK!

I was not sick (hey, I´m a former marine superintendant!) but had a hard time to focus, should have had the 300mm without the TC, but no conditions to change...

Well that comforts me a bit, the point is that with rough weather I couldnt take the TC of... with only the 300mm it would have been easier to get the right focus, I was too close of them for having the teleconverter 1.4 on...

By the way, what focal lenght did you use? I was with 300mm + TC 1.4, that results in 420mm (I am on full frame)

You did extremely well under the conditions! Which sort of boat did you take, one of the old wooden ones or the RIB boat? Humpbacks dive much faster than sperm whales which give clear signs when they are about to dive making it easier for photographers.

The old wooden ones... and we were soaking wet afterwards, the suits were not in perfect conditions... and our stuff too because of the waves, they did not have a safe place to store things. I and not only me had to go to 66ºNorth buy some jackets...

Oh dear, that sounds very uncomfortable! I'll keep this in mind, if I ever get to go on a whale watching tour I'll deck myself out in waterproofs and take a waterproof bag too. 66°North aren't exactly cheap...

The gear helped a lot... and not: the TC was too much, but the weather was so bad and no shelter to remove it from the 300mm...
