Today, only one lama still lives at the temple. This 90 year old professor of philosophy lives in a newly constructed wooden house at the site of the old monastery.
The dismantling of the former Soviet Union and a new constitution in 1992 have allowed the revival of a more open interest in Buddhist lamaism in Mongolia. For many Mongolians, this heralds the chance to develop a stronger identity with their past culture.
