Not entirely sure where this was ... somewhere around Manitoulin Island.

Sault bridges

Here is the International Road Bridge (white) with the Railway Swing Bridge (black, opened here to allow canal traffic to pass) and the amazing red bridge, which is actually an emergency control for the canal. In 1909 it was used ... it swings across the canal in case the lock collapses (as it did then) and holds the water back by means of a series of battens that are lowered one by one from the bridge to stop the rushing water. I took a picture of the sign that explains this (better) which I will upload at some point.

Yellow House at Echo Bay

06 Aug 2013 228
The yellow house is a bit of a landmark. I read a story in the paper about its history once but I have forgotten it all. Since about 2005, Echo Bay is no longer on the Trans-Canada Highway (the new dual carriageway route shifts inland just east of town) so few travellers will see the yellow house anymore.

This very old hotel has been revived. Looks quite nice.

St. Mary's Paper

06 Aug 2013 155
The St. Mary's Paper buildings are apparently being demolished. That is a great loss. They are building a huge new Canada Customs and tourist information area at the end of the Bridge. This requires the demolition of many buildings. St. Mary's Paper was the second big industrial plant in the Sault.

International Bridge, Sault Ste. Marie

The road bridge and the rail bridge on the U.S. side, with the rail bridge having both a lift span and a raising span as it crosses the locks on the American side.
