Originally May Day was dedicated to the working class, but it has evolved into a celebration for students and local residents alike.
When people graduate from high school, they get a student cap, and since they're so proud of it, I guess they wear it on May Day. May Day is also a kind of little carnival because spring is coming. The carnival already starts on the eve of May Day.
