Les sureaux, arbustes et plantes herbacées du genre Sambucus, appartiennent à la famille des Caprifoliacées. Les travaux récents en systématique situent maintenant ce genre dans les Adoxacées. Le sureau est une plante nitrophile ; sa présence indique donc un sol riche en azote.

Früher gehörte der Holunder in jeden deutschen Garten, Valeriane.
Nachdem ich immer wieder Holunderbeeren gepreßt und zu Konfitüre verarbeitet habe, stehen auch in meinem Garten zwei Holundersträucher. Bis zur Blüte dauert es noch eine Weile.
