...but I was there alone (no traffic!) ;-)

But in fact, there is no huge traffic at all on NZ roads (can you imagine road called "highway" with one line bridge, shared with railroad line - without boom barriers and signal lights!

Yes, and it's getting worse... the road is closed now.
