Ein Mammutbaum im Vogelsberg
Die Samen der vier Mammutbäume im Vogelsberg wurden 1895 von dem Botaniker C.A. Purpus aus der Sierra Nevada mit nach Deutschland gebracht. In einer Baumschule in Darmstadt angezogen, pflanzte man sie 1899 im Wald bei Schotten. Sie sind inzwischen 32m hoch und der Umfang des Stamms beträgt in Brusthöhe 1,80 m. In Nordamerika erreichen diese Bäume ein Alter von über 1000 Jahren und werden ca. 100 m hoch. Ob das auch in Europa möglich ist und ob sie den Klimawandel überstehen weiß man natürlich nicht. Das wird sich erst viele Generationen später herausstellen.
