Parthenon of Books - Documenta, Kassel

The picture shows the Parthenon of Books. It's build as a replica of the temple on the Acropolis in Athens. The pillars are filled with more than 50 000 books from all over the world which had been banned formerly or are forbidden currently. The number of books should grow during the time of the exhibition. The work is situated on the Friedrichsplatz in Kassel where May, 19th 1933 the Nazis burned a lot of books during the so-called ' Campaign against the Un-German spirit'. It's a symbol of resistance to any banning of books and the persecution of their authors.

Diese Halle aus Büchern habe ich - glaube ich - auch im TV schon einmal gesehen.

das ist echt beeindruckend. obwohl wir eigentlich in einer aufgeklärten zeit leben und man sich alles ergoogeln kann, treten viele gesellschaften den rückzug in die verdummung und unterdrückung an. in den usa gewinnen die kreationisten an einfluss und in der türkei wird der evolutions unterricht gestrichen. weil er angeblich zu kompliziert sei. aber auch vor der eigenen haustür gibt es genug zu sehen. z.b. wie das öffentlich rechtliches fernsehen nur noch schön wetter programme macht und unser justizminister und konsorten damit beschäftigt sind einen autoritären überwachungsstaat zu bauen. das alles sind keine hoffnungsvollen zeichen für aufgeklärte und freiheitliche gesellschaften.

Was für eine grandiose Idee der Künstler. Beklemmende Vorstellung, daß womöglich all diese Säulen irgendwann gefüllt sein könnten. Gut, daß Du uns diesen Einblick ermöglichst.
