Built in 1885 it is the world's longest fence 5,614 km. It runs across the vast Australian deserts and is a pest exclusion measure to keep wild dogs (dingos) out of South Eastern Australia.

In remote inland South Australia Afghan camel drivers were brought in the 1880s to deliver goods to outlying desert areas using camel trains. This was their mosque.

Tom Kruse (1914-2011) was a legend of remote desert Australia. He was the "Outback Mailman' and used this truck to deliver mail, supplies, fuel and medicines across thousands of kilometers of roadless desert to isolated communities.
