Apatani woman
In remote North-East India, in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, high in the Himalaya, are many tribes of people still living traditional lives. It is a very untouristed place, up near the border of China and Burma. The Apatani women over about 40 all have the traditional nose plugs and facial tattoos. The younger women are abandoning this. The women live hard lives, working in the fields in the simple villages where they live, as well as all the other work of women within the home. They are very poor, and usually are not Hindu.
I took this while travelling in this remote area, in the village of Ziro. I felt very sorry for these women

Pilgrimage stop, Iran
On the road in Southern Iran, near the Iraq border. A rest spot for the thousands of Iranian pilgrims who choose to walk as an act of faith, to Karbala in Iraq. These are set up by local communities along the route, offering food and drink to pilgrims.
The Arbaʽeen Pilgrimage, or the Arbaʽeen Walk, is one of world's largest annual public gathering that is held every year in Karbala, Iraq at the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura, the religious ritual for the commemoration of martyrdom of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad and the third Shia Muslim Imam Husain.
They offered us tea and asked us home for dinner, which happened frequently in Iran, where the people are so very friendly. We were travelling as two people, in a car with a driver, not in a big group or tour.

Crossing the Brahmaputra
In Assam, North East India, in the middle of the giant Brahmaputra River, lies Majuli Island, the largest riverine island in the world, formed of the silt carried by this mighty river. It is an ancient island, sacred to Hindus, and is home to 500,000 people. It fights a constant battle with erosion and shifting shorelines. Ferries like this make the crossing to the island, the cars boarding the ferries via 2 planks from the bank, to the deck of the boat. It is terrifying as there is mostly a huge difference in heights between the bank and the boats, so the planks are at weird angles!
