A nice old monastery, and a 'not quite so old' Lada. I haven't seen one of these in years. They used to be reckoned to be the worst cars ever, sort of like the old Skoda...

I am not a car person, but let me add that this is not just a Lada, it's Lada Niva, famous and probably one of the first (along with Romanian Aro) civilian off-road vehicles designed and made in the Eastern block. Speaking of cars, I noticed also quite extensive use of the large Volga cars for the purpose of long-distance taxis

Funny you should say that. For most of our Georgia/ Armenia trip I had a crippling back injury, which limited me to shorter walks with two sticks. John and two women friends who had begged to come with us from Oz went for a very long hike in the mountains just near here. The trails were not well marked and they were quite lost, when they came across 5 guys in a Niva, off-road, who offered them a lift out, 4WD fashion through the forest trails…with 9 of them in the Niva. They said they had a hilarious time …..

We have a friend who also has a Niva still in Australia
