Central Australia waterhole or billabong

Central Australia waterhole or billabong
Muloorina cattle station. It is hundreds of kilometres from a town. There has been no rain for 3 years. This waterhole is the only water for a vast distance, surrounded by red, dry, dusty desert and salt lakes. It is harsh and unforgiving territory.
It is the result of an uncapped bore from the underground Great Artesian Basin. The water emerges from the ground almost at boiling point.

It never ceases to amaze me how there "grows" the best, the worst and the stunning things of Nature in such a wonderful and real place….
It seems there was a hidden law to make it all in the same place.
Wish you a great new week, we are still using the last Sunday gift of sun and peace.
Cheers Diana.

Yes. It is one of the hundreds of similar million or so acre cattle stations which fill our vast desert inland...they run one cow to about 10 acres. It is very remote.

A stunning landscape and shot, Diana!
Are such periods of drought normal there?
Diana Australis club has replied to * ઇઉ * club
In the central part of Australia, it is desert, and prolonged droughts are part of life. The rainfall is always low, even when it does rain. Australia is the driest country. Only the coastal belt of the country has rain on a regular pattern.
There is a very, very deep ancient source of water, the Great Artesian Basin underlying about 55% of the continent. This water is millions of years old. It has slowly filtered its way over eons from the surface, through the rock layers to deep under the surface. These dry lands are home to giant cattle farms...up to a million hectares. The will have one animal for each 5 or 10 hectares. The farmers drill deep into the earth to pump up water for animals to drink, but there is no irrigation of this land.
It is a very harsh place...often around 50C in summer for long periods of time!

That seems extreme. It is astonishing that farmers' animals can cope with such conditions.
Thanks for the detailed information, Diana.

It"s a great photo, but in spite of this inviting place, it must be hard to be a cattle there, so hot, so dry, so harsh....

The photo is fascinating! I wonder how long the water in the Artesian basin will last or for how long people and cattle will be able to withstand the rising temperatures....
