A sad reminder of the ghastly misguided role taken by the Spanish Empire in the evangelisation and governement of the indigenous people--- although the Jesuits were not so strict as I understand it, and their missions were economically successful -- Messy business anyhow :-)

Even more sadly, the Guarani , who were relatively safe in these missions, became fodder for slavers and violent land grabbers when the covetous and envious empire expelled the Jesuits. All horrible stuff....;-))
