Ghost town

Ghost town
For 90 years Gwalia was a goldmining town. The mine closed in the 1960's and people just abandoned it. Now it sits quietly disintegrating in the middle of the West Australian desert, near Leonora.

Gabriella Siglinde, Special K, , and 23 other people have particularly liked this photo

What a lovely surprise to be linked to an Australian hamlet in the middle of a desert!! Thanks for the tag -- I feel pretty spectral myself at times ..rofl :-)

I have seen old mining towns in the US ( Wyoming, Montana..) preserved for historical and tourism purposes of course. ( they tend to lack in authenticity somewhat:!))
This one seems to have been visited by many vehicles with car plates not at all rusty ah ah
Still it's always fun

Have a nice evening Diana !

Hi Leonora....this place, despite the number plates, is not touristed. No one lives there, and it has been empty both times we have visited....there is no office, no facilities, just deserted houses. I think some people from Leonora Keep an eye on it occasionally, but it is so remote that almost no-one ever goes there. There is negligible rain here so the licence plates, which are not current models, keep fairly well, I guess.
I was going to take a pic in Leonora for you....but it was not photogenic...
Have a lovely evening!

No. There are people living in the tiny desert town of Leonora, about 5 km away. Leonora is about 250 km from any other town. They are old gold mining sites.

This is so far from anything.....250 km to the nearest town (work)and arid desert ...no water to grow things or even to shower...no possibility to live there.....
