Paraguay: Norbert's giant anteater...Myrmecophaga tridactyla (endangered)

Paraguay: Norbert's giant anteater...Myrmecophaga tridactyla (endangered)
In the Paraguayan Chaco, Norbert, a Mennonite farmer, had a young, hand reared giant anteater at his ranch, and took us to meet it. It ate meat from my hand with its long, sticky tongue! Their eyesight is poor, but sense of smell is keen. We had seen a huge wild one earlier in the day in the wilderness.

Ulrike Bohra, Marco F. Delminho, , and 9 other people have particularly liked this photo

Seems like it would be fun to have one "on the grounds" if I lived in such an environment!!

I was absolutely smitten by it after seeing a wild one the day before....and when Norbert invited us home to see his orphan, I was amazed. It ate minced meat from my hand...with its long sticky tongue, snuffling and wheezing with delight as it did so. The tongue feels very strange on the skin!

The hair appears to be coarse? Like a horse's tail is it?

It is, very coarse...like horsehair ...the habitat is thorny and prickly so I guess it is protective. The giant claws rip huge ant mounds (and any creatures like wolves which can attack it) to pieces...the giant horsehair broom tail sweeps dust and ants. There was one of these in our zoo when I was a kid, and I thought it amazing...coming up against a wild one, unexpectedly in the wilds of Paraguay was a highlight of my adult life, and visiting Norbert's pet was just the frosting on the cake! I thought it would be wonderful to have one ....
