The Rock

The Rock
Whether you prefer to call it Uluru (the Pitjatjantjara name for 40,000 or so years) or Ayers Rock (the colonial name for just under 150 years), it's an impressive lump of sandstone. It rises almost 350 metres above sea level and, like an iceberg, it seems most of its bulk is below the surface of the surrounding terrain.

When I took these images (see also PiPs) it was still popular to climb to the top on the ridge to the right of this image (also PiP 3) though the Aboriginal people disapproved - the climb has since been closed. I decided to skip the climb and instead to do my viewing from a helicopter, putting it in context. Best viewed large.

That was also the highlight of our trip to Australia.
We circled Uluru, we looked at the cave drawings, but we also did not climb it out of respect for the customs of the natives.
Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of this trip, because I was still making films at that time...
Thank you for this pictures and for the memories...

A splendid aerial series on this "impressive lump of sandstone", George. I think I will go with the ancient name for it; not only does it have the strength of history with it, but, frankly, "Ayers "Rock" sounds a bit dismissive for this vast, imposing outcrop, the highest elevation for many miles all around, as your photos beautifully show, placing it in context as well as revealing its beautiful color and flowing striations. Even without knowing the language, Uluru has a liquid, rotund sound to it that evokes awe and respect for this special feature of the land. One can see why the ancestors of the Pitjatjantjara people held it sacred. It must be visible for miles all around, a giant mound of reddish stone that looks like it was extruded by the earth and then smoothed out by the elements, a testimony to the powers that shaped the world as we know it.

The context is everything, George, and shows how big Uluru Is and why it is so revered by the indigenous people. Ayers Rock as a name should be consigned to history. Well done. I hope to see it one day.
