Auroras

Auroras
When I'd taken auroral images in the Antarctic long ago, I used a tripod (I had only very slow film). This time I had high ISO and a tripod, but shooting from the deck of a moving ship meant I should have used an even faster shutter. Well, it adds an interesting effect! :-) More images in PiPs, taken at various times on the trip.

Explored.

Family health issues will limit my involvement on ipernity, so my apologies if I do not respond to your comments or visit your images - I shall try to do so as far as possible.

Frans Schols, Heidiho, Nora Caracci, Gudrun and 31 other people have particularly liked this photo

Lucky you George. They promise a return trip for free if you muss the Aurora. I love the sweep upwards and the stars in the second PiP

Did you see anything of the aurora the other evening?

No, I think we're a little too far north (also, the only light pollution here is to the south, which doesn't help).

Back in the late 50s or early 60s my Dad showed me a red glow in the sky one evening where we lived in Sydney. He said it was due to an aurora. He would have known as he was a physicist working in a CSIRO group researching the radio characteristics of the upper atmosphere.

You did well to catch the auroras like this! I usually have 99 shots with zig zags out of 100 even with shorter shutter times:-) On my trip in march we only had one night with auroras and the clouds came in pretty quickly... I'm glad you were luckier!
