Whither photography?

Whither photography?
Today I saw an online news item in which Canon suggest the camera market could drop by 50% in two years, as smartphones take over. tinyurl.com/yd76xmqn As I've been playing with a new phone the past few days (see recent images) the growing capability of phones has really come home to me. One of the two images above was taken with my phone, the other with a 50mm lens on a full frame DSLR (slight editing to crop, adjust some tones, but little else). If you've a few minutes to blow this up as large as possible you may care to try guessing what took which. I much prefer a 'real' camera, but this little exercise over the past few days really has been food for thought.

I can't decide which is which - but I suppose that it would be easier to tell when you compare the two in a situation with less light.

The top one seems to have a bit more detail. A hill-walking friend of mine takes terrific photos with her smart phone. They really are impressive.

I can certainly believe that George, and I think they may be right but I will always keep a 'real' camera. I actually like both pic's. The top one is sharper but I like the softer middle and colours of the bottom one. I look forward to knowing which was which!

Food for thought indeed! The cheap point&shoot cameras will surely be dying out soon.
I hazard a guess that the top shot was with the DSLR because of the bokeh....

Two excellent images George, using the mobile phone is difficult for me as I have a touch of arthritis in the hands, the other issue is that a good phone costs as much if not more than a decent camera.

There is no difference for me. Perhaps the bokeh is a little bit different. I can't answer your question but I guess the first one is taken with the DSLR. Anyway: both are fine close-ups !

to me the upper one is with your camera, the bottom one with the phone.
I think so because of the depth of field ...

I agree with both Nora Caracci and Ron Hanko. Both images are excellent. Viewing them at 2048 resolution, my guess is that the first was taken using the DSLR, the second with the phone (the petals are all sharp, indicating a smaller sensor/shorter lens). Had you used a smaller aperture with the DSLR, it would have been impossible for me to guess.

DARN IMPRESSIVE, George. I think the top image is from your 50mm because the bokeh is there, not merely blur. That's always going to be the giveaway along with the shallow dof. I know this because I fought with my point and shoot for a solid year with 100k pictures TRYING to get that little sensor to create imagery that my husband got from his 5D with macro lens. Can't Be Done. Ain't Gonna Get Artistic Bokeh. You get BLUR. Now...these days...yeah I've seen some bokeh but it hasn't been from a phone camera. Believe me, I keep my eyes on this topic because I love the convenience of "all-in-one" cameras SO MUCH...it was pulling teeth to move to a DSLR but of course I did get what I dreamed of so I am extremely happy. The wonderful thing is that the point-and-shoots have REALLY improved and in fact, have gotten my serious attention, front and center.

Roland (ROL/Photo) www.ipernity.com/home/1067243
has a bridge camera which I'm sure you're aware of, the Sony DSC RX10 IV, and it's FINALLY a camera I'd buy for travel photography and for all around photography. The only thing it can't do is the delicious macros with bokeh that I require as part of my passion with photography. The reviews are awesome too. It's pricey but worth every penny and a mere fraction next to a DSLR with lenses. So, when the time comes that we do more international travel, we'll pick up a pair of these or whatever is their current model.

Isn't it wonderful that times have made it so easy for folks to get awesome pictures?! Of course it doesn't mean the average folk will know fundamentals but if they are interested, the info is easily available! :) Thanks for the super pictures and post, I loved it all! (BTW, lovely image, it's a knockout blossom!)

P.S. Thanks for the wonderful comments on my rave beads pictures and post! :) It was fun to enlighten everyone about this new thing, and yeah...it's a drag about the downfall of so much curicula in today's school system. :(

Thank you very much for these interesting comments, Janet. As you know, the DOF of tiny phone lenses is huge, but this one has a setting called "portrait mode" that I used here. There are two lenses, one longer than the other, and somehow the phone takes an image with each then fuzzies everything beyond what both lenses recognise as the focus point (which can be set). It's a trick that most pocket cameras couldn't do. But yes, it's now possible for most people to get good images in reasonable conditions and you just have to wonder what capabilities will come next. I've now given the answer to my question at the end of the thread.

Food for thought, George? I'll pass, as I already eat too much! lol But seriously, I tend to be a traditionalist and purist in situations like this and reluctant to change, so I'll stick with a good old camera for now. (I'm also too cheap to buy a phone that takes pictures!)

Hope you and yours are well on the other side of the world.

I am going with the majority view but you could surprise us yet, George!
I haven't used any form of SLR since the late 80s! I have used pocket digitals and phone-camera or smartphone since I resumed taking photos in 2011. The reason is that I used to go rock climbing and/or rock scrambling and it was too risky to take expensive equipment which was bound to get damaged among the rocks and too bulky for ease of movement anyway! These days I don't go climbing, but I do like to get among the rocks and scrambling is about my level now. My old Pentax ME and assorted lenses sit forlornly in my parents home in Cornwwall. Right now I am only useing my smart phone as my pocket digital has suddenly packed up and I haven't had time to get it looked at.
Having said all that, I really like your double rose image!

Many thanks, Andy. Yes, I can fully appreciate that a pocket camera/smartphone would be far more suitable for climbing or other outdoor/action sports. I've now given the answer to my question at the end of the thread and a link to an article I've written about smart phones and cameras.

I would guess, the upper one is the shot with DSLR. In my opinion a smartphone is for people, who don't want to change settings manually and let the "camera" to any optimizing. Probably very view people will use a smartphone to take raw images and postprocess it. And if you blow up the image to poster format for your wall, I'm sure you see more difference.

tiabunna club has replied to Berny club
Many thanks for your thoughtful comment, Berny. Yes, I suspect you're right and that most people will simply leave their smartphones on "fully automatic". I think, too, that most enthusiast photographers will continue to use dedicated cameras, though the numbers of us seem to be diminishing. I've now given the answer to my question at the end of the thread.

In the details (color, sharpness, exposure, etc.) the quality difference is clearly visible to me, so I also guess that the upper photo was taken with your DLSR. Now I'm curious about the solution of the mystery. :)

Thanks, everyone, for your interest in these images and your comments. To give an answer to the mystery, those (most) of you who chose the top image as the one from the DSLR were right. But I think it interesting that the cameras in phones have improved to the point where the question had even become realistic - I've now written an article to follow this up.

Of course, I read the answer -- but, had enlarged both photos and decided the top one was taken with your camera ... much sharper details, to me.

Going to be in the market for a new phone .. have a 3G which will soon not be supported -- camera suggestions - that I don't have to take out a loan for and don't intimidate me?

Enjoying your photos - history -- both here and over on Flickr,

You raise the same question I had for the photography teacher at the TAFE here last year. Why aren't the better P&Ss and the DSLRs equally smart?

Good sized sensors and variable focal length / interchangeable lenses + all the smarts = BRILLIANT! When can I get one?

Followed links on Janet's post, I arrived here to make my guess.

Spontaneously without not yet reading previous comments, I first thought the image on top is taken with DSLR. But after staring the full size image for a moment, I now think the one in bottom is taken with DSLR.

Curious to see if that is the case...

And looks like I should have trusted my intuition. I first thought that especially the water drops on upper one are sharper. But then I let my overall opinion on such things as noise and colors to take the lead. Although, actually the one in bottom also do seem to be more "noisy".
