I've not see people collecting it, Bev. And yes, less a little cleaning and packaging, it's pretty much the same as cotton wool balls.

Many thanks everyone for your kind comments and faves. I drove past this cotton for many km but finally just had to stop for a photo. :)

The shipping container sized blocks of harvested cotton are named modules These get processed in a gin to get rid of any rubbish eg bits of leaf and twigs, and to separate the fibre from the seed. The fibre, named lint, is compressed into bales, around 30 from a module. The seed can be used for stock feed and extraction of oil. The lint is graded for colour and length and priced for whiteness and greater length. The cotton in the photo would have fallen from modules being taken from the field to the gin.
